Note: We at MVN Outsider have re-organized our posting schedule in an effort to make our sports coverage more well rounded and timely. For those of you expecting to see the NBA Power Rankings today, that post has been moved to Tuesdays. With these changes, get ready to see more fresh content every day on every major sport. Thanks, and enjoy!Rising:Boston Celtics - Honestly, this team has been on the rise this entire season, piling up wins at a rate that we haven't seen since the 1995-96 Chicago Bulls. They now have won 18 in a row and have tied the league mark for the best start (26-2) for a team with two losses. Their recent success has been due in large part to the play of point guard Rajon Rondo. When the team needs him to score, he does it (as we saw on Sunday in the C's win...

NBA Stock Market: CP3 steals way into record books

Chris Paul shoots over Leon Powe of the Celtics (Photo via flickr.com/Eric Kilby)

With everything that happened during yesterday's busy night in the NBA, there's a lot to get to, so I'll just get right to it: here's the league's big movers and shakers.Rising:New Orleans Hornets - Not only did the Hornets mount an impressive comeback win over the Spurs last night (their tenth win in the last 12 games, putting them in first place in their division), but they also got to see some history. During the second quarter, Chris Paul stole an intended pass from Tony Parker, establishing CP3 as the NBA record-holder for most consecutive games with a steal (106).Paul broke a record that stood since 1986, and by the time the streak ends it's likely that it won't be broken for many more decades. The next longest streak by an active player is 22, by Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo. With apologies to Parker, Nash and D-Will, all excellent...

Eight-Second Violation: Wednesday, December 17, 2008

Firing Coaches is Trendy and Expected By Zach Harper Sports fans have become the most annoying and hated character in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.  No, not the Nate Robinson-sized Oompa Loompas.  And no, not even the annoying kid that wanted to be on television.  Sports fans have become Veruca Salt, the demanding, spoiled brat who wants everything good in her possession and wants it five minutes ago.  In this age of internet, email, text messaging, twittering, twittering on your phone, and instant Facebook updates from anywhere in the world, society and more evidently, sports society has become an instant gratification monster that will whine, bitch, and complain that we aren't being given the best team in front of us.  We're upset that we haven't won five straight world championships in whatever sport our favorite teams play in.  We're upset that coaches, who have probably forgotten more about...

Cuttino Mobley retires because of heart condition

It's always sad to see a good player depart from the league, especially when it is not on their own accord. This was the case for Cuttino Mobley, as he was forced to retire due to a potentially life-threatening heart disease that could be a greater risk with continued play. Mobley's condition is called hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, and is the same condition that was linked to the death of the Boston Celtics' Reggie Lewis. Mobley had a very solid career, and was known for being a gritty competitor with a knack for making big shots. A 10-year veteran, Mobley was a career 16ppg scorer and a double-digit scorer in every season after his rookie year. I will specifically remember Mobley for his time as a Houston Rocket early in his career. Alongside Steve Francis, the tandem gave Houston a die-hard tandem in the backcourt. Francis and Mobley will be forever linked,...

Eight-Second Violation: Wednesday, December 3, 2008

1. What's Going on in the AssociationInjuries Around the League By Brandon Gallawa Tracy McGrady - McGrady loves taking time off around the holidays, and this year is no different.  He announced Tuesday that he will miss 3 weeks to rehab his sore knee.  McGrady has come out saying that he rushed himself back after arthroscopic surgery on May 6, and doctors have informed him that it hasn't fully healed.  He was apparently told it would take 6-8 months to rehab after the surgery.  Apparently doctors don't know that McGrady heals on a different timetable than most.  He would probably miss a month after a teeth cleaning.  McGrady has already missed the last three games, but seven of their next eleven games are against bottom-feeders (LACx2, GSWx2, Memphis, Sacramento, & Minnesota).  The Rockets should be able to keep their head above water while he is out.  The silver lining is...

Sixers clip Clippers, 89-88

The Sixers-Clippers game had all the hype of a backyard brawl between two wannabees. Elton Brand, the quintessential gentleman in a ferocious pitbull's body, came to the Sixers in a maroon job done by superagent David Falk on the conversations between his client, the Clippers star player, and coach. When Falk did this to Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriquez, A-Rod fired his agent and stuck with the Yankees. Meanwhile, everybody's favorite NBA personality, perhaps second only to Gilbert Arenas, decided to follow the spotlight and head down the California coast. The leading role already cast for Elton Brand, B-Diddy was to be cast as the co-star in the L.A.'s leading opening act to the Lake Show. He was to be the Danny Glover to Mel Gibson, the Chris Tucker to Jackie Chan, the Cheech to Chong, the Starsky to Hutch...but turned in to the Turner to a Hooch that skipped...

Knicks trade Zach Randolph to the Clippers

In a matter of 24 hours, Knick GM and President Donnie Walsh traded the Knicks top two scorers. First, Jamal Crawford was dealt to the Warriors for Al Harrington. Now, Zach Randolph was dealt with guard Mardy Collins to the Clippers for Cuttino Mobley and Tim Thomas. This is Thomas's second stint with the Knicks. He spent part of the 2003-04 season with the Knicks after being traded from the Bucks for Keith Van Horn. With the Knicks that season, Thomas averaged a career-high 15.8 points per game in 24 games. Thomas spent the entire 2004-'05 season with New York, averaging 12 points a game in 71 contests. Through 10 games this season, he's averaging 9.5 points per game. As a Clipper, Thomas never really found the shooting stroke that carried him in his time with the Knicks and later on, the Suns. Cuttino Mobley coming to New York...Read more

NBA Stock Market: Parker, Spurs finally get a win

The Spurs' Tony Parker (flickr.com)

Beginning today and continuing throughout the season on Thursdays, I will be analyzing various teams and players from around the league to give you a general view of the ever-changing atmosphere that is the NBA. Which teams and players are moving up, and which ones are dropping? Read below to find out, in NBA Outsider's first edition of its NBA Stock Market.Rising:San Antonio Spurs - It was very weird for me to see the Spurs, a team that has always had success for about as long as I've been a basketball fan, in last place in their division at 0-3 just a day ago. But after yesterday's 129-125 double OT win over the Wolves, a win that required Spurs point guard Tony Parker to explode for a NBA season-high 55 points and 10 assists, San Antonio finally got its first win of the young season. The Spurs won't be anywhere...Read more

The Most Exciting Players in the NBA

Well, soon the World Series will be over, T.O. will be crying about being overlooked by his quarterbacks, and the NBA season will begin. A pro basketball ticket is one of the most expensive in sports, but the league is doing better than ever at the gate- even losing clubs draw exceptionally well. We want to see Chris Paul's drives, LeBron James' "looking-down-into-the-basket" dunks, and Dwight Howard's acrobatic blocked shots. Who are the best draws in The League, whether at home or on the road. Here are the NBA's most electrifying performers: LeBron James, F-G, Cleveland Cavaliers When he throws one down on the break, it appears as if he could put his entire forearm down through the rim, or drop the ball in from above the square. His blind passes are breathtaking, and his fluid movements belie his listed size of 6'8", 240. He's had this appeal since his...Read more

How the West will be won

With the NBA regular season set to tip off in less than a week, it's time to reveal my predictions for how the Western Conference will shape up.  Last year the requirement was at least 50 wins for a team to make the playoffs in the ultra competitive West, and I believe this year will be no different.  That's not to say that all the same teams will be there in the end, however...In addition to ranking the teams in the order that I believe they'll finish, I decided to also separate the teams into tiers based on their potential to win the West.  Here goes...Tier 1: The Clear Favorites1. New Orleans Hornets (1st in Southwest) - I realize that preseason performances should only be taken with a grain of salt, but the Hornets are 6-0 so far, and they have allowed the third-fewest points of any team during the...Read more

NBA 2008-9: Who Will Break Out, Who Will Break Down

Each NBA season features a few performers who exceed previous performances or expectations, and others who demonstrate that they are no longer able to contribute at the level to which we and they have become accustomed. Which players will cross either the positive or negative threshold this season, any why? Comers: LaMarcus Aldridge, F, Portland Trailblazers- While a 17.8 scoring clip and 7.6 reboundsare nothing to sneeze at, L.A. accomplished these things in a lineup where much more was asked of him than will be this season. The reason, of course, is that Greg Oden will be patrolling the pivot. Aldridge will continue to display his considerable defensive gifts, and blossom as a scorer, but free of primary responsibilties to police the lane. His defensive assignments will change. Their will be help when opponents penetrate. There will be more possessions and fast breaks triggered by Oden's rebounds and blocked shots....Read more
